Invisalign remains a popular choice as a discreet alternative to traditional orthodontics for straightening smiles. Unlike braces, this method utilizes transparent trays that fit over your teeth to shift them gently.

Not only is this usually considered more comfortable than standard braces, but it’s also less invasive. The plastic aligners are removable, so your diet and daily routines aren’t impacted as thoroughly. If you’re struggling to remove the trays from your teeth, continue reading to learn 3 helpful hints that might assist you.

Tip #1: Start at the Back

You might think it’s easiest to pull your trays off starting at the front, but that’s not always the case. The transparent material is designed to fit snugly over your arches, and it tends to stick firmly over large molars.

Many patients have better luck removing their aligners by starting in the back of their mouths. Position your fingertip on the inside of your back molar and gently pull it away from your pearly whites. Repeat the same process on the other side, then slowly pull the aligners away from your pearly whites, finishing with your front teeth.

Tip #2: Dry Your Mouth

The smooth plastic of Invisalign won’t gouge the tender tissues inside your mouth like the metal brackets and wires of the traditional method. However, they can become slippery when they’re wet, making it difficult to get a firm enough grasp to take them off your teeth.

You can dry your mouth out enough to grab hold of the trays by opening it for some air for a few seconds prior to removing them. Remember not to leave them out of your mouth for too long, though. If they become too arid, the material can crack, allowing bacteria to penetrate the surface.

Tip #3: Avoid Cold Temps

If you’re struggling more than usual to remove your orthodontics after enjoying a cold glass of water, you’re not alone. The plastic material comprising your orthodontics grows more rigid with cooler temperatures, making it harder to loosen its grip on your pearly whites.

You might think it’s better to enjoy a hot drink instead, but this can warp your trays so they no longer fit. Your dentist may have to replace them to get you back on track with your treatment, potentially adding additional weeks to your overall timeline. The best time to take them off is when they’re the same temperature as your mouth.

If you’re still struggling to remove your clear aligners, you should consider contacting your dentist to ensure they fit correctly!
